The System32 directory contains Windows system files, both.DLL library files used by programs and.EXE program utilities which are a part of Windows. While most of the files you find in here are part of the Windows operating system, third-party software programs sometimes install their own DLL files to this folder as well. Over the years I always wondered what all these files in C: Windows System32 are doing in my Windows XP. I collected most of them and I added the function to them to keep track of what is going on in Windows.
This is NOT a list of tasks/processes taken from Task Manager orthe Close Program window (CTRL+ALT+DEL) but a list of startup applications,although you will find some of them listed via this method. Pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL identifies programsthat are currently running - not necessarily at startup.Therefore, before ending a task/process via CTRL+ALT+DEL just because it has an 'X' recommendation,please check whether it's in MSCONFIG or the registry first.An example would be 'svchost.exe' - which doesn't appear in either under normal conditions but does via CTRL+ALT+DEL.If in doubt, don't do anything.

(17 posts)Hi all, my computer says its missing c:windowssystem32rundll32.exe, i have been told i need to install my Windows 7 again is that true? i have backups on a SanDisk backup but i have never used these sticks before, i have just used disks before. help!!
The rundll.exe is important. It performs a similar function as the svchost.exe. You can try to fix it by running SFC /SCANNOW in an elevated command prompt. If that does not work, make a Repair Install ( http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html ).
Hi whs, I have tried SVC /SCANNOW in an elevated command prompt, but it says, windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. I will try your second option, thanks.
Shutdown the computer, wait 10 seconds, bootup in Safe Mode, and try again,
sfc /scannow
It done the exactly same thing LH, but i was unable to start my computer in safe mode, i have gone to the administrator tools then the diagnostic startup, and i could not get through to the internet, so i had to start it again in the normal startup, normally you just press the F8 to run it in safe mode, but i was not allowed to do that, what should i do know? thank you.
A few questions please :
1) What gave you the error message?
2) Who told you you have to re-install Windows?
3) Do you have the file c:windowssystem32rundll32.exe? (open a COMMAND PROMPT and issue DIR RUNDLL32.EXE /S to see if you do and where).
4) What type of backup do you have on the 'sticks' and how big is it?
5) What program was used to create the backup and how much did you back up?
Usually this is caused by a virus, av.exe, do you have it still running (open Task Manager and look at processes)?
If not, it can be fixed a few ways.
One is just copy the file over to the requestion folder if you have another copy on your system, then run http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm to 'hook it up'.
Scan system with a good anti-virus as this situation usually appears after xp gurdian 2010 virus attack or xp anti-virus 2010 attack. Then download a file, ' exe file association fix' from this link, http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm and after downloading, this run thes file. Hopefully this will fix it.
Otherwise you'll need to get the file off of your Install CD's. If this is the case, post back for instructions.
1. Is the rundll.exe file actually missing. Did you check that in the system32 folder
2. If you want to see what the SFC actually found, paste this command into an elevated cmd and hit Enter:
findstr /c:'[SR]' %windir%logscbscbs.log

Hi whs, if i made a make a Repair Install does it mean i wont lose my email or google earth or any of my games, because i am logged in as an administrator but i dont know if i can log into windows 7 as an administrator trying to set up windows 7? like your 2 choice is asking, i still cant get anything when i put in a cd, but i can get though to it by clicking my computer.
1. Repair install does not touch your data - but it never hurts to have a backup for additional safety. It should not touch installed programs either. But those are easy to reinstall anyhow.
2. If you ran the System File Checker (SFC) in cmd, you must be logged in as admin. cmd runs only as admin.
3. I am not sure I understand your question regarding the CD. But if you want to load from CD, you have to set the CD/DVD reader as first boot device in the BIOS. You do that by changing the boot sequence which you enter by tapping a function key after you started the PC. Depending on the manufacturer, that can be F12, F2, ESC, etc. But the first boot splash screen will tell you.

I tried out your second choice of doing a Repair Install and it worked very well, I kept all my games and programs , I lost that warning that I did not have the c:windowssystem32rundll32.exe, Thank you again whs!!!! Hi whs, I just want to say thanks again!! What happened was i gave my computer and windows 7 disks 32 and 64 to this girl who was meant to be a computer repairer about two weeks ago, she kept it for 3 days then it was returned by two different people, they had not fixed the c:windowssystem32rundll32.exe at all, and they did not fix anything, you can guess what she has done, anyway Thank you again whs!!!
Robert. Never give your disks to anyone. Make copies (which you should do anyway), and give them a copy.
